Tips for installation

Covering shall take place after completing the work of the plumber, the gas-fitter and the electricians but before painting.
The most important basic requirement is to do covering always on a dry, smooth surface.
Already at the start of the work, you must pay attention to the aesthetic requirements of the surface to be constructed. It is not advised to improvise, it is worth planning, or even drawing the place of each element.

Certain antique limestone surfaces, rustic built walls for example seem accidental but if you use them in a random order from the pallet the final result may not be the one you expected. It is worth taking off each stone from the pallet, placing previously the desired pattern on a smooth surface in order to get the smaller and bigger place ordered uniformly everywhere and then based on this you can do the covering.
In case of more complicated nets, patterns this phase is obviously a must.

Work phases
Making the base concrete, equalization of the base.
The stable base may be created by laying 4-6 cm of good quality estrich concrete (TOPCEM or MAPECEM). Before covering it is vitally important to wait the binding, drying time prescribed the manufacturer.

It is recommended to spread deep foundation (Mapei PRIMER G) on the estrich surface of the base by using a brush or a roller. This way a dust-proof, strong adhesive surface is created.

The concrete coverings are rustic, their size is not uniform, and the same elements also slightly differ from each other. This is due to the technology and to the fact that our coverings and handmade. This is not an error at all, the surface becomes unique and unrepeatable by this. For this reason, for the installation, you cannot apply the practiced tricks of tiling. Crosses cannot be used for the coverings, the creation of joint thickness, the space between the tiles are left to the tiler’s eye and sense of proportion, it requires great attention.

On floor, smooth surface
For coverings on smooth surfaces, the manufacturer recommends Mapei KERAFLEX MAXI S1 glue which is also sold by BrigitteHome. This is a non-freezing, flexible tile adhesive, specifically developed for heavy stone tiles. The specialty of substance forming a dough-like paste is that during drying, it does not loses its volume, excluding this way the tilting of the tiles of great size and heavy weight. The Mapei KERAFLEX MAXI S1 dries quickly therefore you may only spread it on a surface of 3-4 tiles at once. It shall be spread on the surface with a spreader of grade 8 and a uniform gluing surface shall be created also at the back of the tiles kept dry.
Gluing on vertical surfaces, walls
The manufacturer recommend the Mapei ADESILEX P9 non-freezing tile adhesive. In case of installing white or light coloured tiles, it is worth choosing white adhesive because it may cause a problem that the surface of the tiles become dirty. However, it’s true that it should not cause a problem for experienced tilers.

The coverings can be cut with diamond discs, but it is worth paying attention to the fact that the surface got this way will never be like the original, moulded one. It may be applied at places where you can hide it or it is not annoying (for example on walls, at borders).

It is recommended to buy the grouting material and the glue from the manufacturer (BrigitteHome recommends and sells the products of Mapei).
Choosing the colour and the grain size of the joint depends on taste. The more rustic is a stone, the more it needs the use of thicker, antique effect joints.
For the concrete coverings, we recommend the KERACOLOR RUSTIC grouting family. This is suitable for filling the 5-50 mm gaps, both indoor and outdoor. However, it is good to know that the big size silica sand grains, in addition to giving a beautiful surface, they significantly corrode the cleaning tools, floor cloths, brooms.
For filling in 2-20 mm joint gaps, we also recommend ULTRACOLOR PLUS. This material has an increased load capacity, mould-free and efflorescence-free, and can be well-cleaned.

In case of the Ceramic coverings, for the bright colour tone, we recommend the jasmine, Manhattan, white colours, for the dark colour tone, it is advised to use anthracite, middle grey and dark grey colours.

You can also use, also for indoor, the KERACOLOR CQ which is suitable for filling gaps of at least 2 mm, and is a material of more fine grains. In the latter case, it is worth paying attention to the joint residues that appear after drying, hardening on the surface of the tiles and can be removed with vinegar solution. If you want to have a more rustic effect, these residues may be left on the surface.

Planning, On-site measurement

We help all customers – if needed – to be able to calculate the costs of covering in advance. Generally, you may plan your expenditures with the following table.

– work fee of covering: 15-30 EUR/m2
– adhesive: 2-3 EUR/m2
– joint: 2-3 EUR/m2
– impregnation: 2-3 EUR/m2

BrigitteHome undertakes also complete interior design services related to its products. We help you in the on-site measurement, planning the covering net, choosing the materials, products that fit the best to the interior, preparing the necessary plan documentation. We provide assistance for choosing the auxiliary materials, adhesives, joints and surface treatment substances that fit the best to the realization of your ideas.
The prices for design and on-site measurement are individual, personalized and suits to the task.

After covering, the surface shall be washed with clear water. It may happen that white circular stains appear on the tiles, these are caused by the cement that secretes during drying, and will appear in a few days.

For cleaning, the use of strong chemicals must be avoided, the manufacturer recommends the use of neutral detergents.

Surface treatment

The concrete coverings are not impregnated by the manufacturer, the surface treatment shall be made after installation. If it is left out, the substances getting on the porous surface may permeate into the stone. Later these cannot be removed.

There are people who intentionally leave this work phase out because the non-impregnated surface – as the natural stone -, ageing naturally, gives a more rustic impression. If the aim is to keep the original condition, the impregnation must be performed.

It is important that only completely clean and dry surface shall be treated, 24 but rather 48 hours after installation and it must be repeated every second year. The impregnation is perfect if the water drops stay on the surface.

Impregnation materials

– Mapei MAPECRETE STAIN PROTECTION which is absorbed by the stone and does not create a coating on the surface.
– Mapei MAPECTRE CREME PROTECTION is also a premium impregnating substance that gives a satin gloss surface to the stone.
– In case of greater use, the two component, water-based Mapei MAPEFLOOR FINISH 58 W can be used which gives a satin surface.
– In addition to its satin gloss, Mapei MAPECOAT 600 W forms an extremely solid, resistant protective layer. All the surface treatment materials of Mapei mentioned above are water-based and free of evaporation so they are not harmful to health.
The Ceramic coverings (Fjord and Cottage product line) are surface treated by the manufacturer after firing. In case of these, if they are used outdoor or in wet areas, it is worth performing a transparent stone wax surface cleaning, impregnation every second year (e.g. Mapei MAPECTRE CREME PROTECTION). In case of coverings without glazing used on walls or as decorative elements, it is enough to perform this procedure every five years. The glazed ceramic covering do not have to be impregnated at all.

It shall be used on highly used surfaces, mainly outdoor, on stairs, in shower trays. The manufacturer recommends the two component, water-based Mapei MAPEFLOOR FINISH 58W.
